It’s a base model Elantra. The whole reason we got a rental is because I THOUGHT my car would be a bit loud and uncomfortable for my Dad and sister... Holy shit this car is terrible. The shocks are stiff as solid steel, the springs are rubber bands, the tires are made from the loudest material known to man, the seats are the absolute worst, and I could just keep on saying how dreadful this car is.

Kinja'd!!!

Something somehow more refined, even after years of abuse for your time.

That’s the same feeling I had about an Acura ILX I drove.

My mom and my sister both have Elantras. I genuinely think they’re unsafe to drive. Okay okay they’re fine as daily drivers and commuters and yeah they obviously passed all their regulated tests, but bear with me.

They have zero steering feel, no feedback of any kind, turning the steering wheel seems to have no direct relation on how the wheels actually turn, the stupid rear suspension is a solid axle which means it hops and jumps over highway bumps and is generally unpredictable to control in normal driving conditions, let alone hazardous or emergency conditions

In 2017 there is no reason to buy an Elantra over a Civic or a Mazda3.

Yes, I was in rental one of those a few months ago, it was horrendous! It was a newer car but the way it drove, sounded and rattled felt older than when I had my 97 Jetta.

My FiST has solid axle beam and it’s fine, you just have to tune it. That’s Hyundai’s problem, it seems like they just throw parts together without seeing if they work in practice. Nothing is tuned, it just merely exists. And that is the case all the way up to the Genesis. And that is why I have no faith in the Stinger or the N-cars.

I’m guessing you haven’t driven a 2015+ Genesis.

They brought Lotus in to tune the suspension, they’re really not bad to drive.

2017

It may handle well, but you can feel none of it.

I didn’t know the FiST had a solid axle beam. That makes Hyundai’s failings even more shameful. I mean yeah the FiST a performance car so it’ll have performance tuned suspension and the Elantra won’t ever match that, but they could’ve at least TRIED.

Don’t forget, even the standard Fiesta is known to handle quite well.

2nd gens are shockingly comfortable actually. I’ve driven mine cross country twice now and really there’s nothing to complain about.

Rental car tires are straight up terrible, that actually might be a big part of your problem

My lifted one is not. It’s not horrific, but it’s not relaxed.

Mine’s got slightly-tired Bilstein shocks that the previous owner put on like 15 years ago and the nicer seats. I’m young and in pretty good shape but I’ve had an 800+ mile solo day and physically felt completely fine at the end.

If it wasn’t for the less refined powerplant and sloppier steering I’d actually put it on par with my dad’s 2004 Acura MDX as a long distance cruiser. Maybe not the highest standard there but that’s the most luxurious vehicle I’ve ever gotten to put serious miles on.

Eco tires are the worst. Those combined with a shit-box sans sound deadening make for an awful driving experience.

I’ve driven mine 1000 miles in one sitting, it made me miss our Trailblazer. Again, it’s not terrible, but it’s bouncy.

Like the mid-2000s Trailblazer? My buddy has an S10 Blazer and it’s way worse than my 4Runner but it also has a pretty ghetto lift

Yeah, not S10. Super smooth straight 6, fairly comfortable poorly built interior, and decent ride quality.

Sound about what I’d expect. Nice on that Suburban by the way, if we’re talking about highway cruising ability that must be quite good

With the gearing and HD suspension, it’s not incredible, but it’s better. It’s good for a 2500 though
